AMD Cuts Guidance on Chipmaking Troubles
Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices just reduced its outlook for the current quarter, saying it now expects sales to grow in the 4 to 6 percent range, down from prior guidance of 10 percent or more. Also, gross margins will be 44 to 45 percent, lower than previously forecast. AMD blamed manufacturing difficulties at its former fabrication arm, GlobalFoundries, for the reduced expectations. AMD stock was down almost 8 percent in after-hours trading.

During a press event in New York City on Wednesday, Amazon announced took the wraps off of its $200 Kindle Fire tablet. Google testing MVNO waters, preparing to battle carriers [updated]
Google may be preparing to take its mobile efforts to the next level as it tests a Google-branded MVNO in Spain. Unconfirmed reports accompanied by photos of a Google SIM card and a Nexus S running on a “Google_Es” network suggest that Google is toying with the idea of becoming a Mobile Virtual Network Operator, or a company that provides cellular service by leasing capacity from existing wireless carriers and piggybacking on their networks. AT&T will begin to push the official Windows Phone 7.5 Mango update to its existing Windows Phone devices next week. The HTC Surround, LG Quantum and Samsung Focus will receive the update beginning Tuesday, September 27th, while the HTC HD7S will be updated to Windows Phone 7.5 some time before the end of October according to an internal AT&T memo obtained by BGR. To update your device, you will simply need to plug your Windows Phone into your computer and launch Microsoft’s Zune software.�Windows Phone 7.5 will offer users�more than 500 new features.

SIMPLE Mobile intros all-you-can-eat talk, text and web plans starting at $40
SIMPLE Mobile announced on Friday that its customers can now sign up for several new plans, including a $40 unlimited nationwide talk, text and web option that is available for smartphone users. SIMPLE Mobile also introduced two new BYOB (Bring Your Own BlackBerry) prepaid plans including a $50 option with unlimited talk and text, and a $60 plan that supports “4G” speeds. SIMPLE Mobile is an MVNO that uses T-Mobile’s nationwide network to support its services, so customers interested in the BYOB plan should note that a T-Mobile BlackBerry will be required to take advantage of the carrier’s 4G HSPA+ network. Motorola ATRIX 2 images and details revealed
BGR has just been given photos of the follow up to the original Motorola ATRIX 4G, the Motorola ATRIX 2, internally known as the Motorola Edison. The Motorola ATRIX 2 will not be an LTE device according to our source, though the phone will launch with a dual-core processor (either 1.2 or 1.5GHz TI OMAP, we’d assume), an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p HD video capture, and Android Gingerbread 2.3.5. We weren’t given a launch time-frame, though we’d expect the phone to touch down in the next few months, most likely around Thanksgiving. Check out all of the photos in our Motorola ATRIX 2 gallery!
